Problem

Large stumps line the north and south bank presenting a danger to vessels and barges.

Recommendation

Remove stumps to provide safe banks for the tows to stop in a meeting, restricted visibility or an emergency situation.

Status

October 1994, Corps of Engineers reports no funds for work outside the channel. Industry requests further action and study to correct a hazardous situation.

October 1997, Corps of Engineers conducted a side scan sonar survey of both sides of Stump Alley. Minimal amount of stumps and debris was found on the south side. The north side has considerable debris in some areas. Mile board signs have been installed at Miles 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and identified on side scan surveys.

August 2001, industry has not had reported problems recently. This item will be considered CLOSED as of 8/10/01.

Action Plan

This problem is beyond the Corps' O&M authority, which provides for maintenance of a 12' x 125' channel. In response to a recent request from the GICA, the Corps provided language for possible legislation to direct the Corps to clear the stumps and provide funds for this purpose.

Problem

Swift currents at the GIWW crossing of Wax Lake Spillway.

Recommendation

Study improvements to provide safe crossing for tows.

Status

October 1995, the rock weir has been removed from above the GIWW crossing and the removal has increased current.

October 1997, Corps is in the process of modeling Wax Lake intersection at the Waterway Experiment Station in Vicksburg to determine what improvements are possible. CLOSED as of 8/10/01.

Action Plan

Current velocities at the Wax Lake crossover were studied as part of the Lower Atchafalaya Basin Re-evaluation study. These analyses indicated that only moderate increases in current velocity are expected over the next 50 years. The Corps has no current plans for further study or modifications to the intersection based on these results.
