Escambia River

Chart Number

11378

Problem

Shoaling at the mouth of the river.

Recommendation

Survey and dredge to project dimensions.

Status

A meeting was held with all interests on Oct. 8, 1998 to develop dredging and dredged material placement options.

July 2002, problem still exists.

Three meetings have been held this year with the Corps, users and Escambia County representatives to develop a short range and long range Dredge Material Management Plan for this reach of the river. No solution, except thin layer disposal, has been identified. A State of Florida water quality certification application package has been resubmitted with this plan.

April 2003: Two meetings have been held in the last 4 months on selecting an approved dredge material placement site for open bay area of Escambia River. Presently waiting Corps resubmittal of permit and Florida DNEP acceptance of proposal to use Mackey Island as a placement site. Last meeting held on 3/12/03.

January 2007: Dredge placement permits have all been secured. Funding is needed for dredging. No money appropriated for FY06.
