This reach of the GIWW was last dredged
in 1994 and is dredged every 8 to 10 years. A recent condition
survey of the area was conducted on June 25, 2001, and does
not indicate any critical shoaling near mile 318.5. Current
depths in this area are as follows: south toe 13.0, centerline
15.5, and north toe 13.0.

Widening and deepening project as currently
designed will virtually eliminate the barge lanes between
Redfish and Morgans Point.

Ensure that the 1,000-foot margin of safety
is maintained all the way to Morgans Point.

HR 2605 passed in 1999 directed the Corps
to "plan and construct barge lanes immediately adjacent
to either side of the Houston Ship Channel from Bolivar Roads

Barge lanes have been constructed in the
lower one-third of Galveston Bay. The barge lanes in the upper
two-thirds of Galveston Bay are currently under design and
the Project Cooperation agreement for construction is being
negotiated with the Port of Houston Authority. Fifty-four
acres of oyster reef will be constructed to mitigate for the
oysters destroyed during construction. Construction for both
the barge lanes and the mitigation is scheduled to start in
Janauary 2004 with completion of the barge lanes estimated
to be October 2004.

This specific problem was not identified
in the reconnaissance phase of the 216 study and is therefore
not currently being addressed. However, this could be addressed
in a Post Authorization action in the near future. The Corps
will investigate the problem and meet with GICA to discuss
possible course for action.

This reach of the GIWW was scheduled to
be performed 3rd-QTR of FY-01; however, due to funding shortfall
work had to be reprogrammed in 3rd-QTR of FY-02. This work
falls within critical habitat; therefore work can only be
performed between April and September.
